Low air loss means air escapes gently through tiny holes in the mattress surface. Here those holes are in cells 4 through 11, under the torso, to help with heat and moisture during long bed rest, while all 20 cells alternate on a 10 to 12 minute cycle.

The pump runs on 7W at 120V and puts out 6 to 8 L/min. Set the pressure between 30 and 110 mmHg, pick static or alternating mode, and rely on built-in alarms if pressure drops or power fails. A CPR valve deflates it quickly.

Nylon with a waterproof PVC coating makes up the surface. The mattress measures 80 in by 34 in and holds 300 lbs. A spare fuse, spare filter and patch kit are included.
